Sibshops
What are Sibshops?
Sibshops are best described as opportunities for brothers and sisters who have a sibling with special needs to obtain peer support and education within a recreational setting. In families where there is a child with a disability often that child consumes the attention and resources of the family. The feelings and needs of the non-disabled child sometimes get “lost in the shuffle.” Sibshops were developed to help bring those children together.
How do Sibshops benefit parents?
Sibshops also provide direct support to parents by offering their children a quality program in a safe environment with highly trained staff. Providing direct supports to the non-disabled sibling strengthens the family as a whole.
Who provides the Sibshops program?
The Maryland Interagency Group providing support for the direction of these Sibshop activities consists of Abilities Network / EFCR, Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, Baltimore County Public Schools Office of Special Education, Baltimore County Infants and Toddlers Programs/Family Support Network, The Arc of Anne Arundel County, The Arc of Howard County, Change, Inc., The Arc of Montgomery County, Kennedy Krieger Institute, Partners for Success, MD School for the Deaf, Jewish Family Services, The Arc of the Northern Chesapeake Region, Harford County Infants and Toddlers Program, Partners for Success Resource Center, Harford County Public Schools.
